Photograph of Alice May EATLEY from Ups & Downs Magazine May 1927

Signature of Alice May

Alice May EATLEY was born on 20th May 1906 at 9 Granville Road, Willesden, London, the daughter of Richard EATLY [1844 - 1907] and Alice Annie GODDARD [1861 - 1945].

Her father, Richard, died  in the last quarter of 1907 when she was 19 months old.    At some stage she was taken into the care of one of the Dr Bernardos Homes.

On 11th November 1910, 4 year old Alice May, now possibly in the care of Dr Bernardos Children Homes,  was admitted to Polstead County Primary School in Sussex.  Her 'mother' is shown as Mrs Johnson.#

In the census of 2nd April 1911 Alice May is shown as fostered by Robert JOHNSON a 52 year old coachman and his wife Agnes, 52, at  The Green, Polstead, Colchester, Sussex.  Also at the address are the JOHNSON's three daughters  Edith, 27,  Dorothy. 16, and  Marjorie, 10.  There is also another foster child, Winifred PULLEN aged 8.

At the time of the 1911 census Alice May's now widowed mother is a 49 year old washerwoman, living at 91 Granville Road, West Kilburn, London with her son Frederick William and her daughters Ellen Ellsworth, Florence Emily and Annnie Horsman.  Her youngest son , William Horsman aged 7, like Alice May aged 4 appears to have been taken into the care of Dr Bernardos Homes;

On 14th September  1922,  aged 16,  Alice May shipped on board SS Minnedosa,  her fare paid by  Dr Bernardos, apparently as part of the infamous British Home Children scheme.    On her embarkation card Alice May records her next of kin as Mrs Eatly, address unknown.

The Home Children Scheme run by Bernardos and other care organisations saw the shipping of thousands of  British  children to Australia and Canada . Not all the children shipped were  actually orphaned,  and cases where the parents were not consulted are not rare.  Many children suffered abuse. sexual, physical and mental in their new homes.   The British Government has recently issued an official apology to the  victims of the scheme, and the British Home Children Advocacy & Research Association is pressing the Canadian Government  for a similar recognition.

Alice May was sent to  Mrs Rose Hobday of  538 Jarvis Street, Toronto, the Bernardos Headquarters for both girls and boys from 1922 to 1945 which Mrs Hobday managed with her husband J. W. Hobday. Many of the girls speak  fondly of Rose Hobday, so perhaps Alice May found a little happiness there.

On 3rd September 1927,  21 year old Alice May embarked from Southampton, England, aboard the Canadian Pacific  ship SS Empress of France bound for Quebec as a third class passenger.  Her occupation is shown as 'domestic'.  Her last address in the United Kingdom is shown as Bank Cottage, Pembry, South Wales, which is probably the adress of her brother and fellow Barnardo's child,  William Horseman EATLY who lived in Wales all his adult life.. A letter to Ups and Downs magazine for  November 1927 from Alice May mentions her visiting her brother.

In Memory Of
JOHN EATLEY
[ circa  1740 - 1770 ]

John EATLY  was born about 1740, probab;y in London, Emgland.

He pursued a career of robbery, burglary and theft with his partner in crime, John OVERAN.

Thei story and grisly end was in a pamphlet
published in London in 1774.

front of pamphlet

The Genuine Life, &c. of John Overan, Otherwise, John Williams:

T H E young hero, whom I am going to give an account of, was the son of Mr. Overan, a jeweller, in the city of Cork, and kingdom of Ireland; who brought him up in a genteel manner, and bestowed such learning on him, as was suitable to his fender years.
When he was about the age of thirteen years, his father and mother, and their son, embarked for England, where they soon after arrived, and immediately came to London.
His father being at that time in good circumstances, took a house at Chelsea, and lived in a very genteel manner, and every day promised him success in business.
When his son arrived to the age of fourteen, he bound him apprentice to himself, to learn the art of jewellery, which he was very attentive to, and in a year or two, became a good hand for the time he had been under tuation, which was a great comfort to his parents, who indulged him in any little amusement he thought proper; and our little hero being parricularly fond of pidgeons, kept several pairs for fancy.
Some time after, it pleased God to call his father to his last home, and his mother carried on her husband’s business, and had her son turned over to her. But she loosing her husband, and being over fond of him, she indulged him in looking after his pigeons and other amusements that at last he growed so negligent in his business that he would do nothing but what he pleased.
Soon after he got acquainted with one John EATLEY, who was extravagent like, himself, and they getting acquainted with women of the town, and not able to support them, they took to high way robberies, house-breaking, &c. which they committed with great success.
They went to different public houses where they thought there was money, plate, &c, and called for wine or punch, and they appearing like gentlemen, were in general introduced into the parlour, or private room, which contained a burreau or cupboard, where generally the publican keeps his money, and effects of value. When they find an opportunity, and the publican busy, they by means of false keys, opens all the drawers, and taking out everything of value, get off even unsuspected.
About four years ago John Eatley and Overran, went to the house of Mrs. Stones, at the Star and Garter in Putney, and being genteelly dressed, they were admitted into the room where Mrs. Stone's property was, and by false keys, robbed her to the amount of two hundred and fifty pounds worth, in money, plate and rings, and got clear off; but soon after they were both apprehended and committed to take their trials at the assizes for the county of Surrey ; but none of the property being found upon them when taken, they were detained till the next affizes, and then acquitted for want of sufficient evidence.
This long confinement hindered them greatly in their wicked employment, and, indeed, one would imagine the hardships they suffer in a jail, besides being loaded with weighty irons, would be a sufficient caution to them never to be guilty of the like again
Soon after they were discharged, Eatley, Overan, and his girl he then cohabited with, went to Ireland, where they committed several frauds and daring robberies; at last his companion, Eatley, was apprehended and tried, and received sentence of death, but Overan and his girl made their escape and got safe to England, where she soon afterwards died.

Overan was capitally Convićted on Thursday the 8th Day of December, 1774, for robbing Mr. Venables, in the Tower, of Three Bank Notes, and eighty shillings in money.

possibly
JOHN EATLY [1766 -    ]

Sergeant John EATLEY of the 37th Regiment of Foot, The North Hampshire Regiment, discharged at Shelburne, Nova Scotia, Canada on 24 December 1783.

Meredith's 37th Regiment of Foot raised in Ireland in 1702. It saw continuous service throughout the Seven Year War against France, Russia, Poland & Sweden.

The Regiment returned to England in 1769 much weakened by death injury and disease, and did not reach full effectiveness until 1775. It is possible John EATLEY joined the regiment at this time.

In 1775, following the start of the American War of Independence, the Regiment was ordered to America

Landing at Long Island virtually unopposed they secured New York and advanced to Philadelphia taking that city following a series of battles and skirmishes.

The Regiment returned to garrison New York where in 1782 they received a Royal Warrant renaming the Regiment 'The Hampshire Regiment'.

Following the end of the conflict and The Treaty of Paris the Regiment was ordered to Nova Scotia, where John was discharged.

The Regiment now known as The Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment (Queen's and Royal Hampshires), [after Princess Diana] currently has units serving in Iraq
