It appears that during the Boer War Alfred G. got caught up in the patriotic fervour that led to the formation of The City Imperial Volunteers in 1900.

Alfred George EATLY, Private in the City Imperial Volunteers and Lance corporal in the 1st London Royal Engineer Volunteers, was struck by a shell from a pom-pom gun at the battle of Diamond Hill on 12th June 1900.* He received wounds to his head, head, chest and both arms.**** He was treated at nearby Botha's farm and later transfered to Pretoria where he died the 18th of June 1900. He was 20 years old.

Alice May EATLEY was born on 20th May 1906 at 9 Granville Road, Willesden, London, the daughter of Richard EATLY [1844 - 1907] and Alice Annie GODDARD [1861 - 1945].

Her father, Richard, died in the last quarter of 1907 when she was 19 months old. At some stage she was taken into the care of one of the Dr Bernardos Homes.

On 11th November 1910, 4 year old Alice May, now possibly in the care of Dr Bernardos Children Homes, was admitted to Polstead County Primary School in Sussex. Her 'mother' is shown as Mrs Johnson.#

In the census of 2nd April 1911 Alice May is shown as fostered by Robert JOHNSON a 52 year old coachman and his wife Agnes, 52, at The Green, Polstead, Colchester, Sussex. Also at the address are the JOHNSON's three daughters Edith, 27, Dorothy. 16, and Marjorie, 10. There is also another foster child, Winifred PULLEN aged 8.

At the time of the 1911 census Alice May's now widowed mother is a 49 year old washerwoman, living at 91 Granville Road, West Kilburn, London with her son Frederick William and her daughters Ellen Ellsworth, Florence Emily and Annnie Horsman. Her youngest son , William Horsman aged 7, like Alice May aged 4 appears to have been taken into the care of Dr Bernardos Homes;

On 14th September 1922, aged 16, Alice May shipped on board SS Minnedosa, her fare paid by Dr Bernardos, apparently as part of the infamous British Home Children scheme. On her embarkation card Alice May records her next of kin as Mrs Eatly, address unknown.

The Home Children Scheme run by Bernardos and other care organisations saw the shipping of thousands of British children to Australia and Canada . Not all the children shipped were actually orphaned, and cases where the parents were not consulted are not rare. Many children suffered abuse. sexual, physical and mental in their new homes. The British Government has recently issued an official apology to the victims of the scheme, and the British Home Children Advocacy & Research Association is pressing the Canadian Government for a similar recognition.

Alice May was sent to Mrs Rose Hobday of 538 Jarvis Street, Toronto, the Bernardos Headquarters for both girls and boys from 1922 to 1945 which Mrs Hobday managed with her husband J. W. Hobday. Many of the girls speak fondly of Rose Hobday, so perhaps Alice May found a little happiness there.

On 3rd September 1927, 21 year old Alice May embarked from Southampton, England, aboard the Canadian Pacific ship SS Empress of France bound for Quebec as a third class passenger. Her occupation is shown as 'domestic'. Her last address in the United Kingdom is shown as Bank Cottage, Pembry, South Wales, which is probably the adress of her brother and fellow Barnardo's child, William Horseman EATLY who lived in Wales all his adult life.. A letter to Ups and Downs magazine for November 1927 from Alice May mentions her visiting her brother.

On 1st June 1929 at the United Church 100 Delaware Avenue, Toronto, Canada Alice May EATLY (sic) a 23 year old spinster, domestic servant, born in England, stating her religion as Spiritualism of 51 Poplar Plains Road, Toronto, York County, Ontario, Canada ~ the daughter of George EATLY and Annie HORSEMAN married Ernest Reginald GALE a 27 year old batchelor, employed as a Lather, born in England, stating his religion as Spiritualism, of 773 Dovercourt Road, Toronto, York County, Ontario, Canada ~ the son of Ernest GALE and Helen Annie FORD in the presence of witnesses Thomas M CRAWFORD and Emily CRAWFORD of 122 Westmoreland Avenue, Toronto. by the Minister R. NEWTON POWELL.*

The Ups and Downs magazine was published from August 1895 to December 1949 in Toronto by the Canadian Branch of Dr. Barnardo’s organization, which brought more British Home Children to Canada than any other.

Alice May's mother, Alice Annie GODDARD, married again to Joseph J WILLIAMS [1848 - 1922] in the September quarter of 1921 in Willesden, Middlesex/London, but he died the following year. In the 1939 Register for England and Wales Alice Annie WILLIAMS, a widow, incapacitated and bedridden, is residding at 149 Malvern Road, Willesden, London
and died aged 83, in Willesden, London in the March quarter of 1945 Ref: 1945 MAR Vol 3a Page 577.

Andrew EATLEY's birth was registered in Upton on Severn, Worcestershire in the second quarter of 1847.

(The only couple in Worcestershire at that time was Matthew EATLY [1804 - ] and Mary BARRETT [1809 - 1864] although GRO records give his mother's maiden name as BURFORD )

In the 1891 census aged 14, she is at the same address with her father and her step-mother Hannah WHITE.

In the 1901 census she is a general domestic servant, living and working at 18 Sarefeld Road, Battersea. London.

Beatrice's brother Ernest Charles emigrated to Canada after 1901 - It appears she followed after him.

A record card of the USA Immigration Service at Niagara Falls border crossing dated 07 June 1907 shows that Beatrice EATLY aged 23 [ she was actually 31 ! ] a domestic servant born London, England permanently residing in Toronto, Ontario, crossed the border to visit a Mrs Chadwick of 140 Genesee Street, Lockport New York.

Beatrice is described as 5'4" - 110lbs [about 7 stone]- Brown hair - brown eyes - fair complexion.

The card also shows that Beatrice landed at St John, New Brunswick, Canada on 16 November 1905 from the SS Sardinian.

Beatrice Maud, Spinster, married John GRIBBLE, Bachelor, the son of William GRIBBLE a stone mason and Eliza WARD in York County Toronto on 16th June 1909. She stated her father was Benjamin EATLY, a refiner at The Mint, and her mother as Hannah WHITE [who on the face of it appears to be her stepmother] The marriage was witnessed by Beatrice's brother Ernest Charles EATLY [ 1881 - ] and his wife Margaret KANE.

Beatrice Maud EATLY died in Toronto in 1946 and is buried at Pine Hill Cemetery, Scarborough, Toronto Municipality, Ontario, Canada and was joined by John in 1957.

Benjamin EATLEY was a resident of Hasfield Gloucestershire the son of Richard Eatly [1734 - 1806] and Elizabeth 'Betty' HARRIS [1736 - 1799].

Benjamin EATLY was born about 1794 and christened on 23 November 1794 in Ashleworth, Gloucestershire the son of Charles EATLEY [1771 - 1844] and Elizabeth.

Benjamin married Eliza HOLLIER [1804 - 1878] in the parish church of St Mary, Hanwell Middlesex on 13th September 1823.

Reports in the London Gazette (Bankruptcy) show Benjamin EATLY a bricklayer of Manor Street, Chelsea. London and thereafter Beaufort Row, Chelsea, Insolvency filed 8th November 1825.

It appears at this time the family moved to France to escape the creditors and possible imprisonment for debt. Sons John Hollier and Benjamin were born during this period of exile.

Benjamin and family returned to London by 1833 and as feared he was imprisoned in Marshalsea Prison by his creditors.

In the 1861 census Benjamin and Sophia , and their children, Benjamin, Henry Charles, William James, Ann Sophia, Sophia Harriett and Alice Charlotte at 4 Queens Place, Queens Street, Chelsea, London, England.

In 1871 the census shows the family living at 14 Flood Street, Chelsea, with additional children Julia Martha Hollier, Albert Edward, Charles Edward, and Louisa Mary. Ann Sophia is not with the family at Flood Street, at aged 19 she possibly is in service elsewhere. Emily Ellen is also missing from the 1871 census entry.

Benjamin Alfred EATLY was born 10th July 1850 at Chelsea Manor Street, Chelsea, London, England, the son of Benjamin EATLY [1830 - 1908] a bricklayer, and Sophia BALL [1828 - 1894] and baptized on 4th August 1850 at St Lukes Chelsea.

In the 30th March 1851 census Benjamin Alfred aged 3 months is listed living with his parents at 2, Queens Place, Chelsea.

Benjamin appears in the 7th April 1861 UK Census as a 10 year old scholar living with his parents at 4, Queens Place, Queens Street, Chelsea.

On 2nd April 1871 the census shows Benjamin A, a 20 year old bricklayer, living with his parents and eight siblings at 14 Flood Street, Chelsea.

Benjamin Alfred EATLY aged 21 bachelor, a bricklayer, of 77 Manor Street, Chelsea the son of Benjamin EATLY, bricklayer married Mary Ann Elizabeth PEPPIAT [1846 - 1884] aged 24 spinster of 55 Manor Street , Chelsea, the daughter of John PEPPIAT, deceased, on 29th May 1871 at the Parish Church of St Jude, Chelsea.

He and Mary Ann appear in the 3rd April 1881 census, living at 14, Flood Street, Chelsea, London with their children. Benjamin's occupation is given as 'bricklayer'. His parents and four of his siblings had moved round the corner to 5 Milmans Street.

In the 5th April 1891 census Benjamin and Hannah are living at 14 Flood Street with the children. Benjamin's occupation in bricklayer.

By the 16th June 1901 census Benjamin and Hannah with their sons Ernest C. and Alfred W. are at 26 Parthenia Road, Fulham. London. Benjamin is still laying bricks.

On his daughter's Beatrice Maud marriage on 16th June 1909, Benjamin's occupation is given as ' refiner in Mint'.

In the census of 2nd April 1911 Benjamin, Hannah and their son Alfred William, are still at 26 Parthenia Road, Fulham. Benjamin, now 60 years old, is described as 'bricklayer supported partly by pension'.

Benjamin Alfred died on 15th March 1921 at 37 Parthenia Road, Fulham. Aged 70. Probate was granted in London on 14th April 1921 to his widow Hannah Augusta Eatly [White] in the sum of £1039 9s 4d [£22,047.09 in 2010]*

The 30th March 1851 census list Charles Henry, an 18 year old bricklayer living at 8 Camera Street, Chelsea with his parents and siblings.

Charles Henry EATLY married Sarah Agnes McFARLANE (Born 1835 in India or Ireland or Plymouth, depending on which census return you consider) daughter of George McFARLANE a Chelsea Pensioner on 12 August 1858 at the Southampton Register Office, Hampshire, England. Charles's brother John Hollier EATLY [1827 - 1877] was a witness to the marriage.

In the UK Census of 7th April 1861 Charles Henry is a 28 year old bricklayer living with Sarah Agnes at 4 Queens Place, Queen Street, Chelsea. They are sharing the house with Charles' brother Benjamin [1830 - 1908] and his family.

On 2nd April 1871 Charles H and Sarah A with Eliza, Charles and George are at 2 Hop Street, Battersea, London. Charles H is a general dealer and apparently doing tolerable well as they have a servant.

In the 1881 census of 3rd April Charles is a 48 year old bricklayer living at 2 Hollier Terrace, Merton Road, Wandsworth. London with his wife and their four children.

In 5th April 1891 the census shows Charles Henry, Sarah with son George Edward and daughter Emma, is living at 'The Hop Pole' Public House 64 Putney Bridge Road, Wandsworth, London where Charles H is the publican. (Their daughter Eliza Sarah had died aged 19 in 1883.)

In the 1901 census Charles Henry aged 68 and employed as a bricklayer, and Sarah are living at 48, Fawes Park Road, Wandsworth, near their son George E. who is at 148 Fawes Park Road. ( Their other daughter Emma Jane had died aged 18 in 1892. )

On 11 June 1904 Charles Henry disembarked at Ellis Island New York USA from the SS Campania. His son Charles Henry was at that time residing at 638 East 55 Street New York.

Charles Henry Senior apparently returned to the UK where he died in Wandsworth in the last quarter of 1909 aged 77 and was buried at Putney Vale Cemetry Eatly 11th November 1909.

On 5 May 1941 Sergeant C H EATLEY RAF in command of Lockhead Hudson aircraft 'O' Oboe of 269 Squadron based at Reykjavik Iceland attacked U-Boat U141 in the North Atlantic about 50 miles (80 km) astern of convoy OB 318. Damage from three depth charges forced the U-boat to break off the patrol. A Whitley aircraft, HMS Electra (H 27) and HMS Escapade (H 17) were directed to the scene, but did not locate the U-boat. In the same census 21 year old Margaret Leona is shown as a house servant at 1477 1/2 Teller Avenue, Bronx, New York, NY in the household of an Austrian laundry owner Nathan TURKEL his wife and their three children.

Chrles M re-enlisted in the US Army on 19th August 1941 at Fort Hamilton, Brooklyn, New York. Three months before Pearl Harbour.
His initial enlistment, Private 1st Class 06909917, was for three years.

Following WWII, 1st Sergeant Charles McKee EATLEY of 618 East 136th Street New York NY was attached to The New York National Guard Service, 71st Infantry between 9th June to 9th July 1947. *

Charles M continued in the service of his country for 30 years through World War II, Korea, and as a Sergeant Major in Vietnam.

On 27th November 1955 Margaret Leona and the couple's three sons departed Idlewild Airport New York NY aboard Pan American World Airways flight 923 for Orleans, France. Listed as the family of Sergeant First Class (SFC) Charles M EATLEY. **

On 14th February 1959 Margaret Leona and the couple's three sons arrived back at Newark International Airport on The Military Air Transport Service flight from Paris**.

The U.S. census taken on 1 April 1940 shows Grace a 44 year old widowed machine operator in a wholesale corset shop. She is residing at 873 Brook Avenue, Bronx, New York and pays $22 per month rent. She had been paid wages of $276 dollars for working in the 12 months ending 31st December 1939 but had been in receipt of additional income other than from employment of over $50 that year.

Grace later married Joseph VENTO [ 20 August 1895 - 30th December 1942 ] the son of Calogero Vento and Accursia Mandracci.

Epaphroditus EATLY was born about 1768 and was christened on 4 March 1768 at Hasfield, Gloucestershire. The son of Richard EATLY [1734 - 1808] and Elizabeth 'Betty' HARRIS [1736 - 1799].

Epaphroditus married Ann POWER of Redmarly D'Abitot, Worcestershire on 07 August 1787 at Ashleworth, Gloucester.

Redmarly D'Abitot Parish Register 1787. 'Banns of Marriage btwn Epaproditus Eatly of Ashleworth and Ann Power of this Parish were legally public 8, 15 & 23 July '.

The Parish records of Ashleworth 17 August 1787 Epaphroditus Eatly of this Parish bachelor and Ann Power of the Parish of Redmarley Dabitot in the County of Worcester spinster were married in this Church by Banns in the presence of: Richard Eatly & Charles Smith.

It appears that after the birth of his son Richard in 1788 the family moved to London as the St Thomas's Hospital [London] admission and discharge Registers for 22nd December 1796, as transcribed by http://www.londonlives.org, show Epaphroditus was a patient at the hospital under Dr Ainslie and Mr Cline. His sponsor, the person who undertook to pay for his funeral should he died in hospital was Mr O. Riordan.

The family apparently were residing in Greenwich, Kent a son James Epaphroditus was buried there in 1792 and son Matthew was baptised there in 1804.

Epaphroditus EATLY married Sarah PREEN [1791 - 1871] at St Mary-de-Lode Church, Gloucester, Gloucestershire, England on 19th October 1823.

In 1839 Epaphroditus wrote a letter to his daughter-in-law Sarah, on hearing the belated news of the death of her husband, his son Richard.

In the 1841 census of 7th June, Epaphroditus a 70 year old bricklayer is residing at Leigh with Evington, Gloucestershire . with his second wife, Sarah [1791 - 1871].

Epaphroditus died aged 82 at Leigh in Deerhurst, Gloucestershire, England on 11 January 1850. He was buried on 16th January 1850 at Leigh.

Born 18th November 1829 at Green Arbour Court in St Luke's parish, Finsbury, London, and christened at St Luke's on 14 March 1830, the son of Richard EATLY [1790 - 1837] and Sarah HOLLAND [1790 - 1862]

In the 1841 census of 7th June 10 year old Epaphroditus is a cotton winder living at Banks Court, St Luke, Middlesex with his widowed mother Sarah and his elder siblings:- Sarah [25], a Cotton winder : Richard [25], a Compositor, Nancy [20] a servant & Elizabeth [15] also a Cotton winder.

On 23 June 1845 Epaphroditus, then at Baltic Street, St Luke, London, was indentured as an apprentice for seven years to George HANCOCK a copperplate and letterpress printer of 55 Aldenbury, St Mary in the City of London. The indenture was witnessed by a Francis HOLLAND, probably Epaphroditus's Uncle, Francis HOLLAND born St Luke 21 FEB 1801. [ Indenture ]

In 1851 the census of 30th March shows Epaphroditus living at 99 Golden Lane, St Luke, Middlesex with his mother Sarah, now a family nurse and his unmarried sister Elizabeth, a dressmaker.

Epaphroditus EATLY, of full age, a bachelor, printer of Chatham Gardens Hoxton, the son of Richard EATLY bricklayer deceased, married Caroline MILLER [1831 - 1897] a minor, spinster, of Ashley Terrace, Hoxton the daughter of George Miller a paper stainer, at St John the Baptist, Hoxton, London on 20 April 1851 in the presence of Elizabeth EATLY and William BALLARD.

The 1861 census of 7th April has 31 year old Epahroditus a pressman, living at 29 Gee St, Finsbury St Luke, London, Middlesex, England, with Caroline and their children George [10], Caroline [7], Richard [3], and Epaphroditus [4 months]. Also in the household is Elizabeth his 38 year old unmarried sister and Caroline his 73 year old widowed mother.

On 2nd April 1871 the family are still at 29 Gee Street, with three additional children Sarah[9], William [4] Samuel [7 months]. 20 year old George had followed his father into the printing trade and was employed as a printers pressman.

Sister Elizabeth unemployed and single was living at the address. Mother Sarah had died in 1862.

The 3rd April 1881 census shows the couple living at 33 Gee Street, Finsbury, London with their seven surviving children, Caroline (27); Richard (22); Epaphroditus (20); Sarah (18); William (13); Samuel (10); and Elizabeth (6). Epaphroditus's sister Elizabeth (58) was also living at the address. Epaphroditus is working as a printer's pressman. Son George had married Sarah Elizabeth NEAL in 1876 and was living close by at 39 Kingscroft Street Islington, London.

The census of 5th April 1891 shows Epaphroditus, a printers pressman aged 61 , & Caroline living at 16 Hale Street, Islington, County of London with daughters Caroline, a book folder aged 47, & Elizabeth, a bookfolder aged 16, son Epaphroditus, a printer's cutter aged 30, and sister Elizabeth a charwoman aged 68.

In the 1901 census of 31st March Epaphroditus is shown as a 71 year old widower and retired printer, living with his daughter Caroline (1853) and son Epaphroditus(1861) at 16 Hale Street, Islington, London.

Epaphroditus died 20th October 1902 at the age of 72 and was buried at Tower Hamlets Cemetery, Bow.

Their duties consisted in the main of guarding defence establishments and prisoner of war camps in the UK. George Edward was discharged from his duties in March 1918 due to his ill health and age. George Edward was awarded the Silver War Badge for Services Rendered*.

George Edward died in Wandsworth in the second quarter of 1928 aged 58 and was buried at Putney Vale on 12 April 1928.

In the census of 2nd April 1911, George Eli is shown as an 11 year old schoolboy living with his parents and siblings at 29, Goldsmiths Row, Hackney Road, Hackney, London.

On 9th May 1914, George Eli, then 15 years old, enlisted in B Battalion 11th London Regiment stating his age was 17 years and 1 month. Fortunately he was not sent to France but was posted to Territorial duties in Roehampton and Wimbledon. His mother wrote to the War Office to secure his discharge, but it took two years and he was formally discharged on 15th May 1916.

Despite her efforts he re-enlisted into the Machine Gun Corps. He survived the war and was awarded the General Service and Victory Medals.

On 8th March 1806, a groom and house servant, he appeared at York Assizes arraigned for horse stealing. He was convicted and sentenced to transportation for 14 years.

Henry and another 190 convicts embarked aboard the ship Duke of Portland in January, 1807.

It appears that at the end of his sentence he remained in New South Wales as a bonded labourer, as he appears as such in the records of North Parramata Gaol, New South Wales where he spent 24 hours in a cell on 29th April 1841 before moving on the next day. He is described as Catholic, 5 foot 6 inches in height, fair complexion with blue eyes. **

Sergeant John EATLEY of the 37th Regiment of Foot, The North Hampshire Regiment, discharged at Shelburne, Nova Scotia, Canada on 24 December 1783.

Meredith's 37th Regiment of Foot raised in Ireland in 1702. It saw continuous service throughout the Seven Year War against France, Russia, Poland & Sweden.

The Regiment returned to England in 1769 much weakened by death injury and disease, and did not reach full effectiveness until 1775. It is possible John EATLEY joined the regiment at this time.

In 1775, following the start of the American War of Independence, the Regiment was ordered to America

Landing at Long Island virtually unopposed they secured New York and advanced to Philadelphia taking that city following a series of battles and skirmishes.

The Regiment returned to garrison New York where in 1782 they received a Royal Warrant renaming the Regiment 'The Hampshire Regiment'.

Following the end of the conflict and The Treaty of Paris the Regiment was ordered to Nova Scotia, where John was discharged.

The Regiment now known as The Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment (Queen's and Royal Hampshires), [after Princess Diana] currently has units serving in Iraq

John Hollier EATLY was baptized on 20 January 1828 in the British Embassy Chapel, Paris, France. The son of Benjamin EATLY [1795 - 1859] and Eliza HOLLIER [1804 - 1878] who had apparently gone to France following bankruptcy proceedings in England.

In the census of 7th June 1841 14 year old John is living at The Globe Public House, Milmans Row, Chelsea, London with his parents Benjamin, the licensee and Eliza, and his siblings Eliza 15, Benjamin 11 & Mary 11 months. Also at the address is his paternal grandfather Charles EATLY [1771 - 1844] a 70 year old bricklayer. Brothers Charles Henry aged 8 and William aged 6, are in boarding school in Hammersmith, London.

The census of 30th March 1851 has John H a 25 year old bricklayer, living with his parents at 8 Camera Street, Chelsea, father Benjamin has reverted to bricklaying. Brother William had died aged 8 in 1843 and grandfather Charles had died in 1844. Also at the address are sister Eliza a servant aged 25, brother Charles Henry aged 18, a bricklayer, and younger sisters Mary 10 and Emma 5 both school girls.

John H. was a witness to his brother Charles Henry's marriage at Southampton in 1858.

Father Benjamin died in 1859 and the census of 7th April 1861 shows John H. aged 32 a bricklayer living with his widowed mother and younger sisters Mary and Emma at 1 Jubilee Place, Chelsea.

By 1871 John H, his mother and younger sister Emma had moved to 132 Lavender Road. Battersea, Surrey, where the census of 2nd April shows him aged 43, unmarried bricklayer.
